Why GA4 and Mixpanel Numbers Don't Match (And How to Fix It)
GA4 and Mixpanel show different numbers for the same events. Learn why session definitions, event scoping, and identity resolution cause discrepancies — and how to fix them.
You open your GA4 dashboard and see 12,000 pageviews. You open Mixpanel and see 9,800. Same website, same date range, different numbers. This is one of the most common frustrations in analytics - and it usually has nothing to do with bugs.
Session Definitions Are Different
GA4 and Mixpanel define "sessions" differently. GA4 starts a session with the first event and ends it after 30 minutes of inactivity. Mixpanel resets the session on each new campaign parameter or after 30 minutes. If a user arrives via an ad, clicks around for 20 minutes, leaves, and returns 25 minutes later - GA4 counts this as one session while Mixpanel counts two.
Event Scoping and Filtering
GA4 applies event-level filtering at the property level. If your GA4 property has data retention set to 2 months, older events vanish from your reports but remain in Mixpanel. GA4 also automatically filters some events as "internal traffic" based on IP rules you may have configured. Mixpanel does not apply these filters by default.
Identity Resolution
GA4 uses a probabilistic identity model by default. It stitches together anonymous and authenticated sessions using machine learning. Mixpanel relies on explicit user IDs and anonymous IDs. When a user clears cookies between sessions, GA4 might still merge them via probabilistic matching while Mixpanel treats them as separate users.
How to Fix the Discrepancies
First, accept that some discrepancy is normal - a 10-15% difference is expected. Second, align on a single source of truth for each metric. Use GA4 for acquisition and session-level metrics. Use Mixpanel for user-level behavioral analytics. Third, validate that both platforms receive the same event payloads. BlayerAI automates this cross-platform validation by comparing event schemas and payloads between platforms in real time, flagging discrepancies before they reach your dashboards.
